Story Line Online
www.storylineonline.net

A series of audio stories read by actors and other personalities geared for the younger reader.

By following the steps outlined below, a screen reader user will be able to independently maneauver the page.

To those experienced screen readers users, the following steps will be familiar. But to those not experienced with screen readers, the steps will seem excessive.

Once the main page has settled down, you'll hear a musical arpeggio followed by your screen reader reading a description of the pages' tables, headings, etc. You can listen to this or tap CTRL to silence the screen reader. While this is good information, the kids just want to hear the stories.

You can tap F5 to refresh the page anytime you get 'lost'. When the page settles back down, start with Step 1.

I again focus on NVDA as it's free, yet feature rich. Some of the keystrokes are NVDA specific, but if you use a commercial screen reader, use it's keystrokes.

Step 1: List Links by pressing and holding down the INS key. Tap F7, then release all keys. In a moment or two you'll hear something like "Elements View, Tree View..".Tap CTRL to silence NVDA.

Step 2: Tap V to highlight View All Stories then tap Enter to select.

Step 3: Once the page settles down with the musical arpeggio followed by the screen reader, tap CTRL.

Step 4: Tap O one time to select the play button which is an embedded object. You'll hear "Blank".

Step 5: To move the mouse pointer to the play button, press and hold down the INS key. Press and hold down the CTRL key. Tap M, then release all keys. Unfortunately, you'll hear nothing. Trust the force. But if you're not sure, tap F5 to reload the page and go back to Step 1.

Step 6: Finally, INS+[ to left click the play button. The story will start momentarily.

When the story is done or if you want to stop it, INS+F7 to list links.
Continue tapping S until Story Line is voiced. Tap Enter to return to main page.

or

ALT+F4 to close out of the Internet.

You can make things simple for the student by first going to the web site and right clicking the book or the book's link. If 'Save link as...', select this, give it a name and save it in a location where the student can easily find it. Maybe create a folder on the desktop and save it there.

If you do this, the student can find the folder by:
1. Windows Key+D to focus on the Desktop.
2. Continue tapping the first letter of the folder's name then tap Enter to open it.
3. When the folder opens, tap Up and Down Arrow keys to highlight the story and tap Enter to start it.
4. When the story is done, ALT+F4 to close out of the story and return to the folder. Use Arrow keys to select another story or ALT+F4 to close the folder and return to the Desktop.
