Fast Food Menu Prices
Fast Food Menu Prices has given permission to translate menus found on the site into literary and Nemeth Braille files for use with Braille reading students in educational settings.
The site contains menus of various popular restaurants like McDonald's, Starbucks, Dunkin' Doughnuts, White Castle...Yes Please!..., etc. Note that the prices might not represent the exact prices found in your communities. However, these files provide practice reading menus and might encourage the individual to ask for a Braille menu the next time they visit a restaurant.
See links below to download zipped files containing Braille menus of popular restaurant's along with sets of accompanying sample questions in Braille and print formats. No need to translate, just open the .brf file using your commercial Braille translating software. Then just emboss. Unless otherwise specified, sheets are formatted for narrow paper.
To obtain a print copy of the menu, please visit Fast Food Menu Prices at:
http://www.fastfoodmenuprices.com
Note: There isn't an option to print on the site, but simply right click anywhere on the screen and select print or select the print option from your browsers File Menu. Plan on about 10 to 15 pages.
Again, all you need to do is simply download, unzip and open the files in your commercial Braille translation program. Again, DO NOT TRANSLATE these files. Just open and emboss.
4_4_14 - The original Sets were removed as quite frankly, the questions were awkward and there were a few minor Braille mistakes, not enough to make them unreadable, but I'd give the student extra points for finding them. See New Updates or Help for the boring details.
New Sets will be added daily until the original 15 or so restaurants are posted again. For now, the following Set(s) will be more than enough to get the digestive juices flowing.
You can view sample .pdf versions below.
You can use your screen reader or Adobe's Read Out Loud. First search for the phrase 'Menu Choices' and begin reading from there.
For those not familiar with Read Out Loud, the following commands can be found in the View menu:
To Activate - Shift + Ctrl + Y
To Pause - Shift + Ctrl + C
To Stop - Shift + Ctrl + E
To Read Current Page - Shift + Ctrl + V
To Read to End - Shift + Ctrl + B
To Deactivate - Shift + Ctrl + Y
The Samples are visual representations of what hard copy Braille will look like. Each menu item begins in Cell 1. Overlaps appear in Cell 3. The questions appear in the same format.
